Cage Evolution

It all started out with Dolores in a 24" x 36" x36" modified Cages By Design Parrot cage.  I had seen some awesome C & C cages online and decided that I could adapt my parrot cage to a piggy cage. My vision was this cage as a two level cage with fleece.  Epic fail. It was too dark and too hard to clean.  Dolores came from Petco and she passed away in less than two weeks from a URI.  From the time she got sick to the time she passed away was less than 48 hours.  I had an appointment for the vet but she didn't make it in time.  It was terribly sad and I couldn't believe how hard I took her death.

Mabeline is my second piggy. A red teddybear guinea pig I got from a breeder in PA.  Here was her first quarantine set up:

I also used this quarantine set up for Agnes and Margo when they joined our family:

When Mabeline was an only pig I moved her from the parrot cage quarantine cage to a 2 grid x 2 grid (AKA a 2x2 which contrary to what you might assume is not 24"x24", it's 30"x30" . Why you ask? Because C and C cages are measured by the number of grids across and each grid is 14" wide, and each connector adds about 1/2" to the overall dimensions.

The cage above was not fully set up but rest assured it' did have a proper base for the cage, it's just not show in the photo since this was the same night I assembled it. I just put the fleece in there to see if it would fit.

This is where my obsession really took off.  Here was Mabelines first official C and C cage (a 2x3 single level grid cage with a stand)

In my next post I will show off some fleece and layout variations I have done.
